THE WIFE IS A FUCKING FRONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (BEARD)
AKA a bloody nice bloke called Jim, aka the MC from Collapsed lung, aka awesome. One of those records bought in the most clichéd ways possible, during the lofis tour, in Liverpool, heard it in a record shop and had to ask what it was. Two instrumentals then, one kinda shadowey, with scratching and a big piano break, the other more like his wiiija album, a big party tune with an old school house lead line. A lot of fun, great on the floor, and with the aforementioned album and more to come, its all good for the rock.
1990, and phonogram are the latest in a long line of long suffering labels to attempt to tame the mighty MES, whilst appeasing the indie faithful with the mask of “cog sinister” From one of my favourite albums (actually, no, this is number one), telephone thing starts with wah wah and a sweet tambouriney beat. It kicks from the off, big dubby keys and bass, squelchy bloopy noises, and a classic snarling Smith delivery, all drawling words and attitude. There are many Fall dancefloor fillers(free range, the cover of lost in music, touch sensitive, and dead beat descendant for those who know their shit) but this is up there with the best.
Holy shit .Really, the first time you hear this record, its like the freshest sound of the last 12 months. Filth, pure dirt, starts with wah wah scratching and a break before zepplin guitars and a vocoded vocal from the depths of hell finish it all off .Its mid tempo, so it just has a kick like none other. Easily in the top 5 of 2003, bought in Ausberg, a tiny town in Germany with about 6 awsome record shops. Anyway. Blah, Fuck….
So it’s a wee bit cheeky this but what the fuck…..this was maybe the first ever remix Jupiter Ace did (he’s now done people like Danni Minogue…..) and for me it’s the best- very very simple, looping the hook “everybody everyone everybody Olympic lifts”)over cz300 basslines, and 127 BPM beats. I play this sucker everywhere, its been featured on compilations as far away as Japan, and is simply a great great remix- very hip-house which we like so much…..and a lot of fun besides.

Crash crew were one of the original MC crews from New York .If you ever see poster retrospectives of the birth of hiphop, their names figure next to Baambatta, Flash, Herc, Theodore, funky four+1 more etc etc. As with so many acts at the time they were signed up to sugarhill, still employing the policy of using a lot of live musicians in the pre Planet Rock samplefest days .And no bad thing either, this is one of the best block party tracks from that era in my opinion, shouty post disco music for the feet, all the classic hooks, call and response, crowd going wild noises etc. A classic bomb.

Yup more catskills….easy to understand why this track started the 3rd kitty litter compilation. The basis of this tune is not unlike what the chemical bros do, find a nice wee old-school hip-hop vocal sample, cut it up, and put a break beneath it, however the sound here is much more organic, and less full-on housey, it has big brass, a simply awesome drum loop, and a sweet scratch breakdown done like Yoda or Format (actually maybe format did it, fellow brighton boy….hmmmm)
Known and now starting to be loved the land over, this is the man who when not in the Kitchen with Abdominal cooking up a splendid concoction, is now touring and releasing tracks with his old mockers J5. But this remix, is too good. Its like a big soul mash-up, all Memphis horns and killer breaks. On New years eve I dropped this, a little drunk, forgetting that Pablo, who was up next , might want to play his mix himself. The humiliation. Anyhoo, this will be Format’s year, but do not overlook this B-side- it will move the kids to distraction.
Now to dismiss this album because of some hang-up over the chart hit that was “Boom!Shake the room”, is a big mistake. Period. Taking a direct link from Sugarhill circa 1983 and pre-dating the feel-good summerness of The Pharcyde, Jazzy Jeff produced some alsolute classic cuts, this being one of the. The intro- drums bounce and a crowd cheers, reprising the classic line used more recently by J5 in the Kazoo solo from “Concrete schoolyard”. And we’re off! Big choruses, nice rhymes from a young fresh faced will smith, this will move the crowd something sick.
